What Is MJF?
MJF builds parts by depositing layers of polymer powder. An inkjet array selectively applies fusing and detailing agents across each layer. The fusing agent absorbs infrared light, while the detailing agent controls the spread of the fusing agent. An infrared lamp then passes over the bed, heating the powder to near-sintering temperature, and the areas with the fusing agent solidify into a solid layer. This process repeats layer by layer until the part is complete.

MJF 3D printing finishing options
As-printed
The part is de-powdered and cleaned via air blasting, leaving a natural grainy texture. Depending on the material used, the finished product is typically grey or black.
Vapour smoothing
Parts are placed in a chamber with solvent vapour, which condenses to soften and smooth their surfaces. As it evaporates, a glossy, sealed finish forms, reducing surface roughness and enhancing appearance.
Vibro polishing
Finished parts are placed in a vibrating container filled with polishing media, such as ceramic or plastic beads. The continuous vibration gently abrades the parts’ surfaces, reducing surface roughness and improving finish quality.
Dyeing
Parts are dyed by immersion in a warm colour bath. The dye penetrates the part’s surface to a depth of 0.25 mm to 0.5 mm. Available colours include black, blue, red, green, and yellow.
Custom
You can specify custom finishes such as painting and electroplating. Note that custom finishes require manual review and quoting and may be subject to approval.
